23 April is International Children’s Day as initiated in Turkey by Atatürk.

National Sovereignty and Children's Day in Turkey is a unique event. The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, dedicated April 23 to the children of the country to emphasize that they are the future of the new nation. It was on April 23, 1920, during the War of Independence, that the Grand National Assembly met in Ankara and laid down the foundations of a new, independent, secular, and modern republic from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. Ataturk entrusted the future protection of this sovereignty and independence to the hands of the youth. The importance of April 23 as a special day for children has been recognized by the international community. UNICEF recognizes this important day as the International Children's Day.

2005 The Marmara Pera

04 March 2005 saw the official launch of Istanbul? Yeah! 2005 and the continued promotion of the Rainbow Bridge project. Since then, NPP have been to other locations and venues inside and outside of Turkey and back again to set up an in-house atelier and gallery at The Pera hotel. 2003 ZAGA TV

NPP printed a calendar poster for 2004 featuring the image Where East Meets West and a request to support Rainbow Bridge at www.nedpamphilon.com

Zaga TV host Okan Bayulgen saw the poster, liked the project and immediately invited Ned to guest on his late night Kanal D Zaga TV show on the evening of Saturday 13 December.
Rainbow Bridge was presented to a young audience at 3.00hr on the Sunday morning. By Monday www.nedpamphilon.com had received over 100,000 hits and the quick vote counter went from 200 to over 30,000 votes.

However, the TV appearance also highlighted the website to less desirable traffic. Website hackers attacked www.nedpamphilon.com deleting in particular portraits of Atatürk and leaving Islamic text on the site. It eventually led to NPP having to change the website server and rebuilding the site.

2002 History Channel Launch

TOPHANE - ISTANBUL

NPP participated with the TASK/TAY archaeological organisation to present the launch of Digiturk’s The History Channel within the historic Tophane building.

Istanbul? Yeah! imagery portrays all aspects of modern day Istanbul which inevitably includes the past. These images ideally lend themselves to organizations such as TASK.

Istanbul is a strategically placed barometer for the rest of the world. In many ways, Turkey is an integral leader in the way forward for global trade and communications and better understanding in tomorrow’s world. To understand tomorrow, it helps to understand our history.

Today was determined by yesterday, yesteryear, yesterdecade, yestercentury.............

………….the better the world understands Turkish history, the better we might understand the predicaments of today’s world, because Turkey itself stands as an expression of the tension between cultures and countries, north and south, east and west. The better the global communication, the better the opportunities for global trade and investment and the exchange of information and cultural values.

Bordering 7 countries, 3 seas and straddling 2 sea-straits and dividing two continents, Turkey has been central to European and Asian history to-date and inevitably will continue to be so.

The TASK Foundation had recently collaborated with NPP on a calendar featuring Istanbul? Yeah! imagery. Published by the corporate sponsors of the TAY Project and the TASK Foundation, the calendar promoted the vitally important work which the TAY Project and TASK undertake to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Turkey.

The establishment of the TASK Foundation stems from the principle of preserving Turkey’s cultural heritage, stopping all kinds of destruction, and promoting this heritage to international public opinion. All kinds of support to this Foundation contribute to the rejuvenation and reawakening of cultural values that might otherwise be lost and forgotten.

1999 İstanbul? Yeah!

In 1999, NPP staged the first ever contemporary art exhibition within the Kapalıçarşı - Grand Bazaar in conjunction with Adnan & Hasan of Halicilar Caddesi. NPP painted the pictures, produced the poster, leaflets, brochures and books, all under the title of Istanbul? Yeah!"Like humanity itself, Istanbul is young yet old, vibrant yet decaying, traditional yet unconventional. There are few cities in the world that reflect the untethered human spirit, as does this one. These contrasts make Istanbul alive and fascinating and are embodied by her people. Sometimes it can feel impossible to do anything here, yet anything can seem possible in Istanbul."

İstanbul? Yeah! @ The Grand Bazaar

İstanbul? Yeah! was officially conceived with this exhibition, opened by Mayor Lütfi Kibiroğlu. NPP consider much of the work produced in Istanbul before and since as very much part of the same on-going concept.

The Kapalicarsi is the largest covered market in Istanbul. Mehmet II originally founded the Bazaar in 1461 to provide traders with a safe and orderly place in which to do their daily business. With 65 streets and approximately 4,000 shops, the Kapalicarsi has withstood fire and earthquake and still remains among the most famous markets in the world. The city itself was the centre of both the Byzantine Empire up to 1453 and then the Ottoman Empire. Renamed "Istanbul not Constantinople", she has remained a strategic East-West crossroads up to and beyond the advent of Ataturk’s Turkish Republic in 1923.

TV, radio, newspapers and magazines covered the exhibition providing a welcome spotlight for the Kapalicarsi and Istanbul. A catchphrase was born as shopkeepers filmed for TV declared 'Istanbul? Yeah!'

Istanbul? Because we are questioning and analysing the city, its location, image,

foundations, people, history and culture; indulging in the city’s romance and adventure; exploring the possibilities and pondering its future.

Yeah! Because Yeah is a definite and positive affirmation in the comic-book style familiar to generations throughout the world. It answers the preceding question with an unequivocal yes! As The Beatles put it: “She loves you, yeah! Yeah! Yeah!”

As Sakip Sabanci (Spokeperson for Sabanci Holding) said:

“Over the years, our nation has achieved a great deal. So what’s next? Just one thing; Global Brands, Global Brands, Global Brands!”

Istanbul? Yeah! lends itself well as a branding tool, using NPP’s images to promote Istanbul and Turkey as bright, vibrant, historical and contemporary; a counterbalance to the negative image the country has sometimes endured.
